China's high-tech product exports hit $218B

China's Ministry of Commerce recently reported that the country exported $218.25 billion worth of high-technology products in 2005.

According to the agency, China's exports of high-technology products registered more than 31 percent growth last year, with the sector accounting for 28.6 percent of the country's overall exports for the year.

The Ministry reported that the PC sector achieved the highest export value, with $104.84 billion, up by 24.9 percent. The communications sector came next with $72.28 billion worth of exports, up by 37.8 percent; followed by the electronics sector, with export value of $24.48 billion,up by 32.7 percent year-on-year.

However, the opto-electronics sector garnered the highest export growth of 89 percent, although its export value only came in fourth at $7.18 billion. Exports from life science and computer-integrated manufacturing systems posted export values of $$4.56 billion and $2.08 billion, up by 41 percent and 38.9 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, China's imports of high-technology products grew by 22.5 percent, with total imports valued at $197.71 billion last year. The segment represented 30 percent of the country's total imports for the year.
