Panasonic, the leading brand for which Matsushita Electric Ind. Co. Ltd is best known, announced that it will invest approximately $85 million for a new building and cutting-edge equipment to expand its semiconductor assembly and test capacity in Singapore.

Adjacent to its existing plant, the new building for Panasonic Semiconductor Asia Pte Ltd (PSCA) will cover a gross floor area of 15,900m2 and will be completed by the end of 2006, the company said. PSCA is also considering the establishment of another new building over the next five years for further expansion of its assembly and test facilities.

According to the press release, technologically advanced products such as System LSIs, including BGA and LGA for use in digital TVs, digital still cameras and mobile communication devices will be produced in the new building, targeting markets in Japan and Asia Pacific countries.

At the new building's ground-breaking ceremony, Akinobu Minagawa, managing director of PSCA, said, "Singapore has become a more attractive location for manufacturing activities with the EDB's vision of doubling the manufacturing output by the year 2018. It has sent a strong signal and boosted the confidence of manufacturers that the manufacturing sector will continue to receive strong support from the government and we would certainly like to take this opportunity to work closely with EDB to explore other possible areas for further cooperation."
