Micron Technology Inc. unveiled a one-quarter inch, 2Megapixel image sensor designed for use in mainstream camera phones. According to the press release, the MT9D112 was developed using the company's 2.2?m pixel technology, which reduces the sensor form-factor to one-quarter inch for simple design into smaller camera phones while maintaining picture quality.

The MT9D112 features a fully integrated SoC sensor that includes an integrated microcontroller (MCU) that achieves more efficient image processing, global reset to avoid image tearing, and pixel binning for enhanced image viewing, said Micron. The MCU increases the device's flexibility to adjust color and other image processing functions, and the integrated auto focus saves time, design cost and space normally incurred by a second companion chip.

The MT9D112 is powered by the company's proprietary DigitalClarity technology, providing best-in-class image performance. Additionally, the sensor is capable of 15fps at full resolution and 30fps in video mode, capturing clear video clips.

"We currently see camera phones trending toward higher resolutions while needing to maintain their intrinsic small form factor. A one-quarter inch, 2MP sensor design is the industry sweet spot," said Bob Gove, VP of Micron's imaging group.

General customer sampling is planned for April 2006, with mass production expected in August 2006.
