High-voltage metal glaze axial-leaded resistors

Offering two to three times greater voltage ratings than standard or pulse-rated leaded resistors, the MG series of high-voltage metal glaze axial-leaded resistors from Stackpole Electronics Inc. allows designers to replace multiple parts or more expensive solutions with a single component.

The MG series is constructed using thick-film metal glaze technology, which is said to provide excellent voltage characteristics and is offered in standard axial-leaded sizes with power ratings of 0.25-, 0.5-, 1- and 2W. These devices also tout a high?ic capability with a resistance value range of 100 k? to 200 M?. The series offers tolerances as low as 1 percent and temperature coefficients of 200ppm.

The MG series offers voltage ratings of 1,600V for the 0.25W, 2,000V for the 0.5W, and 3,500V for the 1W and 2W devices. Because the voltages are two to three times greater than the highest working voltage of standard or pulse-rated leaded resistors, a single MG resistor can replace two or three other resistors, which offers several benefits including lower manufacturing costs and smaller size and weight of the end product.

These devices may be used in a variety of applications such as voltage division, circuit protection, inrush current limiting, and any other high impedance requirements. This makes them suited for medical applications such as EKG, ECG, and heart defibrillators, and industrial machinery and welding equipment, both of which typically require voltages higher than what a standard resistor can withstand. They may also find homes in power distribution in buildings and between buildings which require the use of a high-voltage resistor in protection circuitry.

The MG series is available in bulk, ammo pack, and tape-and-reel. Typical pricing ranges from 4 cents to 20 cents, depending on power rating, ohmic value and tolerance. Delivery is eight weeks.
