Taiwan's IC industry posts lowest growth rate since 2002

Taiwan's Industrial Technology Intelligence Services (ITIS) reported that that the region's semiconductor industry registered its lowest growth rate since 2002.

ITIS stated that the IC industry, including manufacturing, foundry, packing and testing segments, registered a growth rate of 1.3 percent last year, with production value reaching $34.5 billion. In 2004, the industry's production value reached $34.27 billion. For 2006, ITIS forecasts a 10 percent increase for the sector, with production value to reach $38 billion. Digital TV and wireless communications will continue to drive demand for the sector.

Meanwhile, the IC design sector posted a higher growth of 8.6 percent in 2005, despite posting a production value of $8.5 billion. In 2004, the sector's production value reached $7.8 billion. ITIS expects the sector to see a more than 15 percent growth this year, with production value to reach $9.9 billion.
