Chip receives digital mobile TV signals

Frontier Silicon has introduced the Kino 2 which was designed to bring TV to smaller phones with longer battery life and lower cost. Kino 2 is the company's second generation semiconductor device for receiving digital mobile TV from the Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) Platform.

Kino 2 builds on the features of Kino 1, but was designed with improvements in size, power consumption and cost. The device measures 10(L)-by-10(W)-by-1.3(H)mm, consumes 100mW of power, and supports a full decoding rate of more than 1.8Mbps.

Kino 2 is a multimode device and supports all T-DMB variants as well as DAB and DAB-IP. The device enables advanced features such as conditional access and data services to be implemented in software. It is designed to be combined with the multi-band capability of the Apollo silicon tuner, which will enable mobile TV featured devices that are compatible with the requirements of all T-DMB markets worldwide.

Kino 2 also supports DAB Digital Radio, and it can be used in non-cellular applications, bringing mobile TV and DAB into any gadget that with a display and a speaker.

Pricing for a kit with the Kino2 and Apollo RF front end is $15 each in volume quantities. It is sampling now, with volume production scheduled for Q2 2006.
