Now on its 11th year, the IIC- and ESC-China exhibits will open in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing next month. More than 180 semiconductor suppliers, IC design companies, solutions providers and device distributors have already signed up for the event, possibly reaching a record-breaking 800 booths.

LCD TVs will be one of the hot topics in the exhibit, as these displays have become superstars in electric appliance malls in China. Philips is set to introduce the TDA15600 to reduce cost and simplify the development of middle- and low-end LCD TVs. Meanwhile, Renesas Technology will introduce its DVP-M series, which implements all main signal processing functions for LCD TVs. National Semiconductor will also announce what it claims to be the first dual-3D adaptive video converter in the industry.

Another headturner will be a showcase of multimedia devices on the exhibit floor. Portable multimedia players are geared toward being multifunction, high-performance devices with low power dissipation. Texas Instruments, SigmaTel, Philips, Freescale, Intel, ADI, Anyka and Sharp, among others, will be presenting their multimedia solutions in the forums.

3G mobile phone
With global shipment expected to exceed 700 million units this year, the mobile phone remains a major driver for the growth of the semiconductor market. Several manufacturers, such as Nokia and Samsung, have introduced their 3G mobile phones to the China market, but customers can't use these new products without network supporta situation that may change this year. China has been anticipating the approval of 3G licenses, especially for TD-SCDMAwhich, proposed by China Wireless Telecommunication Standards group, is expected to be the first.

Freescale Semiconductor will show its 3G single-core modem processor at the heart of the MXC300-30 platform based on the Mobile eXtreme Convergence architecture. Meanwhile, Infineon will unveil its MP-EU platform, which can accelerate the introduction of new-generation UMTS terminals. Philips' Nexperia System Solution 7210 is a complete 3G/UMTS hardware and software solution, incorporating complete baseband, RF and multimedia functionality. The solution can play a variety of A/V formats, including MP3, WMA, MPEG-4 and H.264.

As a low-cost, low-speed wireless controlling and monitoring networking technology, Zigbee is gaining support from family and industrial applications. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, UWB, RFID and Zigbee will appear in booths of exhibitors at the IIC-China 2006.

Regarding Wi-Fi, Marvell will unveil its latest 90nm WLAN single-chip solution. It raises the bar for WLAN performance by offering very low system power consumption, 400mW, and a small total system footprint of 50mm2.

Chipcon AS will show its latest true SoC IEEE 802.15.4 low-power wireless sensor networking device, which is aimed at Zigbee products.

CSR will show its 5G BlueCore, integrating Bluetooth v2.0 and enhanced data rate, as well as stereo DSP of echo-elimination/noise-suppression software. TI will introduce the BlueLink platform, a complete Bluetooth software and hardware solution for handsets.

Meanwhile, Atmel will unveil a contactless, low-frequency RFID chip for multi- or single-tag applications for animal identification, washhouse management, industrial automation, object tagging and ISO card. ST Semiconductor, on the other hand, will introduce a UHF contactless memory chip compliant to the latest Electronic Product Code specification.

Bringing all these design technologies to Chinese engineers is the main goal of the exhibit. IIC-China 2006, the biggest integrated circuit exhibition in China, and ESC-China 2006, an embedded system exhibition, are must-see events this March.
