Altera Corp. has released low-cost Cyclone II FPGAs that can operate in the extended temperature range of -40C to 125C for designers building temperature-sensitive applications in the industrial, military and automotive sectors.

Cyclone II extended temperature devices can be combined with the Nios II processor, creating an embedded product that is suitable for applications with stringent temperature requirements, the company said. For example, automotive applications such as entertainment systems, navigation systems and telematics controllers can be implemented in a Cyclone II device using a Nios II processor.

Cyclone II devices supporting extended temperature range are available today for immediate shipment from distributors worldwide. Also available in extended temperature range are the MAX CPLD series, the HardCopy structured ASIC family and the Stratix FPGA family.

The Cyclone II FPGA, part number EP2C35, costs $22 in 250,000-unit volumes, according to a spokesperson.
