Spirent's user equipment performance tester

Wireless analysis provider Spirent Communications announced the latest member of its Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) testing family of products. Spirent's user equipment (UE) performance tester is designed to accelerate the successful deployment of next generation wireless.

For these deployments to succeed, handset manufacturers, network operators, and test houses must undertake extensive handset performance testing. Spirent's UE tester is a platform that can evaluate all aspects of data throughput for High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and the R99 recommendation, from the physical layer to the application layer.

The launch of Spirent's UEPT comes as mobile operators prepare to deploy HSDPA networks. HSDPA data cards are now commercially available, and handsets will arrive soon. What's more, prototype devices capable of even higher data rates are in the process of development.

Emulate wideband channel characteristics
In use, the platform can emulate wideband radio channel characteristics so that data throughput can be credibly assessed under realistic RF conditions. As such, carriers can get a realistic view of how systems will perform on a live network.

Network operators and device manufacturers can also realize a new way to evaluate wireless devices in terms of data throughput efficiency and the user experience. These are things that heavily affect customer satisfaction and the efficient use of network resources.

"The nature of HSDPA's shared data pipe increases the complexity of the interactions between the network and the UE," said Rob VanBrunt, VP of product marketing.

The UE performance tester's configuration consists of Spirent's existing AirAccess WCDMA-HS Network Emulator, its SR5500 Wireless Channel Emulator, its Test Drive software and a Data Throughput Test Pack. The AirAccess WCDMA-HS provides network emulation, ncluding the Core Network, RNC, NodeB and cell.

For its part, the company's SR5500 generates accurate and repeatable impairments in order to determine device performance in realistic RF environments.

The Test Drive executive software automates unattended test sessions. As the name implies, the Data Throughput Test Pack is a software module that implements data throughput testing.
