RF Micro Devices Inc. (RFMD) announced its new RF5184 high-efficiency linear power amplifier (PA) module. According to the press release, this latest addition to RFMD's PA portfolio is specifically designed to be the final RF amplifier in high-performance WCDMA wireless handheld devices, and is a dual-band product that supports Region 2 (1,850MHz to 1,910MHz) and Region 5/6 (824MHz to 849MHz).

In conjunction with the company's RF5198 single-band PA for Region 1 (1,920 to 1,980MHz), said the press release, RFMD is uniquely positioned with RF solutions in industry-leading form factors for all three of the current WCDMA marketsEurope, United States and Japan.

According to Gartner research, the WCDMA market is expected to double to over 100 million handsets in 2006. To support the continued growth and evolution of this next-generation air interface standard in its regionally-specific markets, RFMD plans to continue strengthening its WCDMA PA portfolio.

"With the RF5184, RFMD expands its support of WCDMA-enabled devices into the United States and Japan regional markets, where WCDMA penetration is expected to grow significantly," said Konrad Alvarino, GM of components business unit at RFMD.

Key features of the RF5184 include Region 2 Pout of 28dBm with 40dBc ACLR at 5MHz, and Region 5 Pout of 28dBm with 41dBc ACLR at 5MHz. This PA module is HSDPA capable and is DC/DC converter compatible.
