South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd said early this week (Feb. 20) it has agreed to supply an advanced fixed-line telecommunications technology, named triple-play service (TPS), to a Croatian service carrier.

Samsung said it has agreed a strategic alliance with Portus d.o.o., Croatia's second largest fixed-line telephony operator, to provide technology for both TPS and a mobile Internet service, known as WiBro.

Under the agreement on TPS, Samsung will supply Portus with equipment worth approximately $60 million over the next two years. This is set to include soft-switches and trunk gateways. Portus, which is also being provided with support to design and set up the TPS system, plans to launch commercial services in Croatia from next year, Samsung added.

The TPS system to be offered to Portus is based on ADSL2-plus technology, which can transfer data at rates of up to 24Mbps and is about three times faster than an ADSL-based system, Samsung said.

Samsung said it successfully backed Dutch fixed telephony operator Versatel Telecom International to launch the ADSL2-plus based TPS in Netherlands last September.

TPS alludes to packaged offerings combining VoIP, high-speed Internet access and IP TV broadcasting with a single broadband line.

Samsung is set to ship WiBro systems and terminals to Portus, targeting commercial launch of the fledgling mobile Internet service in Croatia by the end of this year. South Korea is scheduled to begin its commercial WiBro service by June.
