Arima Optoelectronics Inc. is undertaking a strategic partnership with compound epitaxial crystal manufacturer Advanced Epitaxy Technology (AET) to enable the Taiwan-based LED maker to boost its capacity for AlGaInP LEDs, which currently stands at 550 million units per month.

According to sources at Arima Opto, the agreement will be finalized before March 2006. Previously, Arima Opto merged with its fully owned subsidiary Arima Epitaxy in an effort to combine company resources and to increase its LED chip capacity.

Arima Opto is also preparing to ship its 4-inch and 7-inch LED backlight modules this month, and has disclosed plans to develop larger modules before the end of the year. The company expects its lighting system business unit to account for 15 percent of its overall revenues for 2006, up from 5 percent the previous year.

Arima Opto posted a 26 percent year-on-year growth in revenue in January 2005, reaching $7 million. The increasing demand for LEDs is expected to boost the company's full-year revenues to $98 million in 2006, up from last year's $81.37 million.
