TFT LCD drivers use TSMC's 0.18m process

Sunplus Technology Co. Ltd announced the availability of two system-on-a-chip TFT LCD drivers. The SPFD54124 TFT driver targets 262K-color QQVGA amorphous resolution applications, while the SPFD54221 LTPS TFT targets 16.7M-true-color QVGA resolution applications.

Both devices are the first chips in production with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd's (TSMC) 0.18m 32V high-voltage process technology.

The SPFD54124 is a QQVGA (132x162) amorphous TFT LCD driver with low power consumption and integrated functions of display RAM, DC/DC converter, oscillator and adjustable VCOM generator. Meanwhile, the SPFD54221 is also a highly integrated low power QVGA (240 x 320) LTPS TFT LCD driver. Its functions include display RAM, DC/DC converter, oscillator and adjustable VCOM generator. It is designed for cellphones, smartphones, PDAs and multimedia products.

"The SPFD54124 and SPFD54221 highly integrated SoCs are the ideal solutions for mobile display because of the high C/P ratios, enhanced add-on values and minimal size of LCM to fit them into limited spaces," said Da-Chun Juang, VP of Sunplus' LCD business. "The active matrix LCD technology has achieved faster response time, higher resolution, increased color depth and is becoming the trend for the next generation of multimedia and cellphone display applications."
