Oscillators eliminate need for 'virtually all' external supervisors

Maxim Integrated Products introduced its new MAX7387-MAX7391 family of silicon oscillators that promise to deliver all the popular supervisory functions of medium-accuracy silicon oscillators.

According to the press release, these devices switch frequencies and range from 32kHz for low-power modes, to 16MHz in high-speed mode. The new silicon oscillators are designed for high-reliability systems, as they do not utilize external high-impedance nodes commonly found in ceramic resonator circuits. This makes them less susceptible to dirt, humidity and high-EMI/ESD conditions, said Maxim. In addition, these devices are less sensitive to environmental concerns such as vibration and shock since they do not rely on mechanical methods.

Integrated into the oscillator family is a reset output to interface with a microcontroller, power-fail detection to alert the system of an impending power failure, and a watchdog to monitor the health of the system. According to the company, these oscillators eliminate the need for virtually all external supervisors.

The MAX7387-MAX7391 family is guaranteed for operation over the -55C to 135C temperature range, and is specified over the -40C to 125C automotive temperature range. Total accuracy is 4 percent over -40C to 125C, and 2.75 percent over 0 to 85C. At a supply voltage of 3.3V, the supply current is 2.9mA for the 16MHz device. Prices start at 65 cents (10,000-up, FOB USA).
