NetLogic, Broadcom team on packet processing

NetLogic Microsystems Inc. is collaborating with Broadcom Corp. to provide Ethernet routing solutions to the carrier market, enabling carriers to launch services based on Ethernet communications technology.

The NL3180GLQ family of NETLite processors from NetLogic interface to the StrataXGS III 600 Series of carrier-class Ethernet router devices from Broadcom to offer a multitude of intelligent packet-based protocols at wire-speed on multiple gigabit Ethernet ports. These capabilities support the deployment of next-generation IP converged networks, including IPv6 routing, protocol tunneling, virtual private LAN services, policy-based routing, per-flow VoIP management, and service provider bridging.

With its ability to operate up to 250MHz, the NL3180GLQ can connect with two StrataXGS III 600 devices via industry-standard Network Processing Forum LA-1 specification interfaces, NetLogic said. The high-capacity rules database can also support up to 512K IPv4 and up to 128K IPv6 records per device.

On the other hand, StrataXGS III 600 Series provides both GbE and 10GbE interfaces, and integrates 12Gbps HiGig Serdes technology for resilient scaling of StrataXGS devices across backplanes in modular chassis systems.

"The Broadcom and NetLogic Microsystems' collaboration delivers scalable carrier-class Ethernet solutions supporting a rich set of intelligent routing features at wire speed," said Eric Hayes, director of product marketing for Broadcom's network switching business unit, in a statement. "The resulting solution enables our mutual customers to develop a new class of profitable Ethernet IP-based triple play ready services."
