Samsung, Siltronic to form wafer venture

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd and Siltronic AG are in talks to form a joint silicon wafer venture in Singapore, according to a report from the Financial Times Deutschland.

The report indicated that Samsung and Siltronic were in "advanced talks" about the silicon wafer venture. No other details were given.

It has been a topsy-turvy time for Siltronic, which shelved its initial public offering in Germany back in 2004. The company is losing ground to other silicon wafer makers, including MEMC, SEH and SUMCO.

German specialty chemicals company Wacker Chemie AG is also said to be in talks to sell its wafer making subsidiary, Siltronic, with U.S. investment firm Francisco Partners being among interested parties, according to a recent report.
