ATI buys Shanghai-based board supplier

Graphics processor supplier ATI Technologies Inc. has acquired Macrosynergy, an XGI Technology alliance graphics board supplier based in Shanghai. Terms of the transaction were not immediately known.

ATI expects the acquisition to expand the company's R&D expertise in China, where computer hardware demand is growing at a compound annual rate of 5 percent over the next five years. IT hardware spending is expected to reach $20.3 billion in 2006 and surpass $23 billion in 2009, according to Gartner Dataquest.

In a related move, 100 employees of XGI Technology's Santa Clara, California will join ATI.
