Micrel discuses dual mode power management solution at IIC-China

Micrel Semiconductor presented its technical paper entitled "Power Management for Mobile Products" at the 11th Annual International IC-China Conference & Exhibition (IIC-China) this week.

Focusing on providing DC/DC+LDO dual modes power management solutions, Micrel's paper discussed the various trends in power management for the market's most rapidly growing applications.

Micrel explained that low dropout (LDO) regulators are suitable for buck converters, delivering high efficiency for light load, better transient characteristics, EMI immunity and simplicity. However, when powering heavy load, an LDO device will consume much more power for the dropout voltage. Meanwhile, a DC/DC converter is suitable for both boost and buck applications with high efficiency, but has load-dependent EMI characteristics and high ripple voltage across the whole load range.

"Thus, we made use of both technologies' superiorities by integrating LDO and DC/DC converter into a dual mode power management solution," said Chen Xiao Bin, senior power management FAE at Micrel. "When load is light, the cellphone can be powered by LDOs, and when load is heavy, the cellphone is supplied by a DC/DC converter."

Micrel added that the four features of its dual mode solution are power saving, low noise, low profile and reliability.
