Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) announced the availability of a TMS320C6455 DSP evaluation module (EVM) and a TMS320C6455 DSP starter kit (DSK), both with a Serial RapidIO (sRIO) bus interface. The C6455 DSP, based on the TMS320C64x+ DSP core and at the heart of the EVM and DSK, is now sampling and is suitable for applications such as video and voice transcoding, videoconferencing servers, high-definition (HD) video encoding and mixer systems, wireless base station transceivers, HD radio, medical imaging, and photo labs and printing.

According to the company, system performance is boosted 12X because sRIO eliminates IO bottlenecks by providing a low latency, high bandwidth (10Gbps full duplex), low pin count interconnect. The new EVM and DSK includes a multiprocessor C6455 DSP development system with sRIO communications connectivity to third party tools, FGPAs, sRIO switches and sRIO equipped embedded processors.

The C6455 EVM and C6455 DSK seek to provide a complete modular development platform including both hardware and software. The C6455 DSP evaluation module allows sRIO development by providing the AdvancedTCA AMC (Advanced Mezzanine Card) connector that connects to a second C6455 DSP on an AMC form factor daughter card. Interprocessor communication takes place through the 10Gbps 4 lane sRIO bus via the AMC connector, which also supports connection to third-party sRIO expansion cards. The EVM adds UTOPIA and Gigabit Ethernet MAC interfaces, along with more DDR2 memory. TI offers the Code Composer Studio Platinum IDE (integrated development environment), with DSP/BIOS kernel support for sRIO Message Queue API.

TI added that the C6455 DSP can increase performance and I/O bandwidth by two to 12x, depending on system design and application requirements.

The TMS320C6455 DSP evaluation module and starter kit are now available. Suggested retail pricing is $495 per unit for the DSK and $1,795 for the EVM. The C6455 DSP is shipping in TMX pre-production with 1GHz, 850MHz and 720MHz speeds starting at $179 for quantities of 10,000 units.
