2005 fabless semi revenue topped $40 billion, says FSA

Fabless semiconductor company revenue topped $40 billion in 2005 for the first time, according to a report released last week by the Fabless Semiconductor Association (FSA). Fabless company revenue equated to 18 percent of all semiconductor sales in 2005, according to the report.

Fabless company revenue growth grew by 9.7 percent last year, according to the FSA's CYQ4 2005/Year-End 2005 Global Fabless Fundings & Financials Report. North American companies accounted for 77 percent of fabless revenue, followed by Asia with 20 percent and Europe with 3 percent, according to the report.

In terms of fabless company venture funding, the report found that 129 companies raised $1.6 billion, an 11 percent year-over-year dollar amount decrease, but a 10 percent year-over-year decrease in the number of deals closed.

The report found that the top 10 fabless companies accounted for $20.7 billion, or 52 percent of total fabless revenue. According to the report, the top 10 fabless companies by revenue in 2005 were:
