Signal interface vendor Technisys is rolling out a product it calls the digital recorder interface (DRI). Priced at less than $5,000, the firm's DRI de-serializes high-speed data streams for parallel interfacing to recorders. It will do this from either optical or electrical media.

The DRI module interfaces STM-1/OC-3 fiber optic or STS-1/E4 equipment. Playback is handled through the same module, and can be performed simultaneously from the same or a second recorder. The module is operable from -5V and 5V power sources.

The system's line interface is compliant with ITU-T G.703, G.825, G.958, Telcordia TR-NWT -00253, and ANSI T1.105.03-1994, T1.105.05-1994, and T1.102-1993 specs and recommendations.

Web operable
A Web-enabled user interface is available through any Web browser. User control is implemented through an RS-232 port and a 10/100 Base Ethernet port. Operation is carried out via Ethernet to an embedded Web server.

Communication setup, such as Internet Protocol (IP) addressing, is handled through a terminal interface via the RS-232 comm port.

Lots of LEDs
You also get a number of front-panel indicators. The system includes indicators for functions such as LINE, LOCK, RECORD, PLAY, and PARITY ERROR. Basic RECORD and PLAY, as well as LED brightness can be controlled from the front panel, too.

Other salient features include low-voltage differential signaling or differential emitter-coupled logic parallel system interfaces, and configurability for 8bit or 16bit parallel operations (plus parity). You also get a source-selectable playback clock.

The DRI modules also impart rate adaptation, which is useful for legacy equipment such as the Sony DIR-1000. Other PDH line rates are available, too, such as E1, T1, E3, T3 and E4. A multiplexer module is available to interface several low-rate inputs to one recording channel as well. Finally, an analog input is available.

DRI module 701308 is for STM-1/OC-3 interfacing. DRI module 701308-1 is for STS-1/E4 applications.

Laptop-sized chassis
You can also order a 701180-1D chassis. The 701180-1D is a portable laptop-sized chassis capable of accepting two Technisys modules.

The chassis is powered by -48V, which makes it suitable for use in a telco central office. It can also be operated independently of CO power by using a 48V desktop power supply. Technisys also offers its 701219 Battery/Charger Unit for the purpose. This source is also laptop-sized.

You can also get a 701197 IF Module. It's an intermediate frequency device that provides attenuation or gain of 70Hz signals. It has a 30MHz bandwidth.
