SigmaTel Inc. launched its new Software Development Kit (SDK) 4.201 for its fourth-generation SoC portable multimedia player solution, the STMP3600. The SDK aims to provide customers a robust software development environment offering Microsoft PlaysForSure version 1.2 support for Windows Media DRM10.

The features of the SDK include the following: ability to store and play WMDRM10 content from removable media such as SD and MMC cards; audio playback with simultaneous JPEG decoding for slideshows and wallpapers; standard interface support; WMA encode capability and power consumption of up to 70 hours of battery life.

Future iterations of the SDK will provide support for the Microsoft PlaysForSure version 2.0 specification and support for multi-format video decode functionality (H.264, MPEG4 ASP and VC1).

SigmaTel said that their portable multimedia solution delivers as much as a 30 percent lower bill of material costs, high-speed USB 2.0 and reduction in PCB area through integration. The solution offers support for MP3, Windows Media Audio and OGG Vorbis. Additionally, SigmaTel's SoCs support NAND flash solutions on the market, including large block SLC and large block MLC Flash.

The new SDK 4.2 was made available in limited distribution to SigmaTel STMP3600 beta customers in early January 2006. SDK 4.201 for all other customers is currently available.
