Philips Semiconductor and Samsung Electronics are two pioneers in the mobile TV industry. At the recently concluded 11th Annual International IC-China Conference & Exhibition (IIC-China), both companies demonstrated their respective solutions targeted at this market.

According to the keynote speech delivered by Philips' CTO and senior vice president Rene Penning de Vires in Beijing, the company employed system-in-package (SiP) to incorporate 90nm CMOS SoC, mixed circuit design, BiCMOS RF circuit design and some passive devices (that is RF front-end). De Vries also said in his keynote address that nanometer scale process technologies will demand stronger links between physical device effects and system-level simulations, making design abstraction even more difficult to achieve.

Samsung's DVB-H solution
At Samsung's booth, the company showcased a DVB-H solution based on three independent chips: S5M8600 RF tuner, S3C4F10 baseband channel decoder and S3C2442 mobile application processor. The first two are a pair of DVB-H front-end chipset.

Although a discrete solution, said Samsung, the S5M8600 can reduce external RF components without the need for an external IF SAW filter. Meanwhile, the S3C4F10 can implement link layer operation without an external memory. The S5M8600-S3C4F10 chipset meets the Mobile and Portable DVB-T/H Radio Access Interface specification.
