Sanyo Epson Imaging Devices Corp. has entered into an agreement with BOE HYDIS Technology Co. Ltd of South Korea to license BOE HYDIS' wide viewing angle technology for LCDs, Advanced Fringe Field Switching (AFFS).

According to the press release, Sanyo Epson will combine AFFS with its own mobile technologies to develop new wide viewing angle technology, with the aim of commercializing the next generation of high-resolution small and medium-sized LCDs in the Q1 of fiscal 2006 (April to June).

As part of its high quality, compact design, low power consumption, system solutions (HCL-S) technological development strategy, Sanyo Epson will leverage AFFS technology to develop products with greater added value and to shorten lead times by enhancing its wide viewing angle technology, said the press release. AFFS achieves a wide viewing angle of 180 from left to right and top to bottom, maintaining high contrast and reducing power consumption without lowering the brightness thanks to an improved transmittance, added the company.

Sanyo Epson believes that AFFS takes wide angle viewing technology to a new level by applying it to the production of small, high-resolution LCDs. It promises to boost viewing angles for LCDs used in mobile phones and other portable devices, while also achieving high transmittance and low power consumption. Additionally, the combination of AFFS and Sanyo Epson's Photo Fine Chromarich technology will enable Sanyo Epson to provide LCDs with ultra-natural colors that faithfully reproduce colors from all viewing angles, the press release said.
