LG.Philips LCD expects area shipments for the Q1 of 2006 to decline slightly compared to the Q4 of 2005, a change from previous guidance of a mid-single digit percentage increase.

According to the company, the panel price per square meter of glass at the end of the Q1 of 2006 versus the end of the Q4 of 2005 is expected to decrease by a high single-digit percentage, slightly greater than the its previous guidance of a mid-single digit percentage decline.

"During the first quarter of 2006, the industry is witnessing a faster than expected average selling price decline in all product segments," said Ron Wirahadiraksa, president and chief financial officer of LG.Philips LCD, in a statement. "Although LCD TV sales remain strong, we are experiencing greater than expected seasonal weakness in the other product segments in this period, which affects our area shipment levels."

LG Philips' announcement contradicts a recent report by Wedbush Morgan Securities that LCD panel prices have been falling slower than expected. However, the report did note spot softnesses in demand.
