Capacitors deliver low ESR for high-current apps

AVX Corp. targets high-current applications with its line of RoHS-compliant medium- and high-voltage ceramic capacitors. Key applications for these SK and SV series devices include power supplies, high-voltage coupling and DC blocking as well as military products.
The SK series for medium-voltage applications up to 500V is specifically designed to handle high currents and is suitable for commercial switchmode power supply applications such as input/output filtering.
In higher voltage systems up to 5kV, the SV series of high-voltage MLC radial capacitors offers a high capacitance value in a small case size, such as 1.2?F in the SV17 package. The capacitor also exhibits low equivalent series resistance at high frequencies and has low leakage characteristics.
Both versions are offered in COG and X7R dielectrics with Z5U for the SK only. The capacitors are conformally coated with high insulation resistance, high dielectric strength epoxy that eliminates the possibility of arc flashover, said the company.
"The added advantage of both these capacitor families lies in a special internal design minimizing the electric field stresses within the MLC," said Craig Hunter, AVX strategic marketing manager, in a statement. "This results in a significant reduction of partial discharge activity within the dielectric and has a major impact on the long-term reliability of the product."
Pricing typically starts at $1.25 in small volumes for both the SK and SV series. Delivery is from stock to 12 weeks.
