Agere approved vendor for Nvidia Ethernet PHY chip

Agere Systems announced that Nvidia Corp. has named Agere to its approved vendor list. Agere achieved approved vendor status due to rigorous and successful hardware and software interoperability testing between the company's ET1011 Gigabit Ethernet PHY chip and the NVIDIA nForce media and communication processors (MCPs) used in PCs.

Investments made by both companies to certify interoperability enable PC manufacturers to confidently use the combined solution in their motherboard designs. The combined solution offers PC manufacturers a significantly simplified motherboard design process, reducing overall engineering investment, while enabling a more cost-effective solution with an accelerated time to market.

"Nvidia has completed comprehensive tests to ensure interoperability of the ET1011 with our newest Nvidia nForce4 MCPs for the UMA market," said Drew Henry, general manager of MCP products at Nvidia. "Without a doubt, the Agere ET1011 is ready for real-world use."

The interoperable chips are the Agere ET1011 Gigabit Ethernet PHY and the NVIDIA nForce 430 and Nvidia nForce 410 MCPs. Based on its patented TruePHY Gigabit Ethernet technology and cable diagnostic software, Agere's ET1011 enables error-free cabling performance at 140m while consuming a very low 750mW of power in typical applications.

Agere's ET1011 is housed in a low-cost, thermal-efficient package with integrated regulators, making for a significant reduction in the bill of materials. For the notebook marketwhere real estate is at a premiummanufacturers can quickly take advantage of the low power, low BoM and reduced system engineering metric that the ET1011-based solution enables.
