Power supply solution delivers less than 1W standby power

ON Semiconductor, a supplier of power management solutions, unveiled its third GreenPoint reference designthis one for 220W LCD-TV power supplies. Like the CRT-TV design ON introduced earlier in the month, this TV design is said to deliver standby power of less than 1W, addresses functional blocks of the power supply, and meets international regulations for low standby power dissipation.

The new reference design utilizes several of ON Semiconductor's products, namely NCP1395 and NCP5181.

The NCP1395 is a resonant mode controller that includes a 1MHz voltage controller oscillator and protections featuring various reaction times. This device is offered in an SOIC-16 package, priced at $1.38 per unit in 2,500 unit quantities, and a PDIP-16 package, priced at $1.50 per unit in 500 unit quantities.

The NCP5181 is a high voltage power MOSFET driver that provides two outputs to drive two negative-channel MOSFETs. It uses the "bootstrap" technique for the high-side power switch. This device is offered in an SOIC-8 package, priced at $1.60 per unit in 2,500 unit quantities, and a PDIP-8 package, priced at $1.74 per unit in 1,000 unit quantities.

Other key devices include the NCP1653 and NCP1027. The NCP1653 is a power-factor correction (PFC) controller that suits continuous conduction mode PFC applications like those found in flat-screen TVs. This device aims to reduce part count and provide a front-end without range switches. It device is offered in an SOIC-8 package, priced at 80 cents per unit in 2,500 unit quantities, and a PDIP-8 package, priced at 88 cents per unit in 1,000 unit quantities.

Meanwhile, the NCP1027 is a highly-integrated switch-mode power supply switcher. This device aims to provide improved efficiency at light loads by entering a skip cycle when power demand is low. It is offered in a PDIP-8 package, priced at 95 cents per unit in 1,000 unit quantities.

Supporting devices include: TL431, a programmable precision reference; MBR10H100CT, a 100V, 10A, H-series switchmode power rectifier; MBRS260, a 60V, 2A, Schottky power rectifier; and MMSZ7V5E, a 225W, 7.5V, energy-rated Zener.
