A family of molded light guides from Global Lighting Technologies uses only one LED to backlight displays for a variety of applications. Using the company's patented MicroLens technology, the light guide is said to provide higher brightness than other LED-based backlighting solutions with a reduced part count and lower cost.

The MicroLens backlights are available in sizes from 0.24-inch to 15.4-inches diagonal to provide single LED monochrome, bi-color or tri-color backlights. Applications include micro displays used in digital still cameras, digital camcorders, cellphones, PDA keypads, programmable touchscreen thermostats, home security system controller keypads, fish finders, instrumentation and control displays, automotive interior displays and desktop monitors.

The company said the MicroLens pixel-based light extraction technology makes it possible to offer fully integrated backlighting modules with higher brightness, crisp color, extreme thinness (to 0.60mm or below), excellent uniformity (approximately 80-85 percent on average), lower power consumption (typically 1mA to 20mA at 3.5V), as well as a cost savings as a result of a smaller form factor with fewer components.

Developed in a very thin package with mechanical holding features, the MicroLens devices can be designed into the backlight, or on a custom-designed backlight frame. This allows chip-on-glass or chip-on-flex LCDs or the entire display assembly to be easily mounted into the host application, which can reduce part count, assembly and material costs.

Pricing for the high-efficiency single-LED backlights depends on size, design, and volume. Simple single-LED backlights can be purchased in quantity for as little as $1 or less.
