Panel maker Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO) has reportedly finalized its plans to establish an 8G LCD facility.

The industry has been abuzz with reports that the company will be joining the competition for 8G LCD technology. Other manufacturers, including Japan-based Sharp Corp., and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd and LG.Philips LCD Co. Ltd from South Korea, have been planning on building their own 8G production lines. Sharp has reportedly intended to begin mass production of 50-inch LCDs in the second half of the year.

However, analysts say that the LCD market may experience slow investment startups in 8G technology.

Industry observers also believe that CMO's plans on joining the league will likely prompt AU Optronics Corp. to setup its own 8G line was well. CMO has also disclosed that it will begin construction of its second 7.5G plant next month. The facility will be located at the Kaohsiung Science Park. Volume production is slated to commence in 2008.
