Worldwide shipments of TFT LCDs used in mobile handsets are expected to reach 780 million units this year, up by 20.2 percent year-on-year, according to Japan-based research firm Market Access.

However, the research firm stated that the rate is lower than last year's shipment growth of 35.6 percent to 650 million units for the segment. Market Access also projected that TFT LCDs will account for a bigger share of the global handset market, to 84.4 percent from last year's 79.9 percent. The research firm revealed that the surge is mainly due to the expected stronger shipments of mobile phones worldwide. This sector is projected to reach shipments of 865 million units this year, posting 11.2 percent growth from last year's shipments of 778 million units.

Market Access also warned that an oversupply of mobile phones might occur as large-scale makers, such as Nokia and Motorola, ramp up capacities. Both companies reportedly accounted for more than 51 percent of the global handset market last year.
