Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) opened a wireless technology research center aimed at multimedia mobile communications in Seoul, Korea, on March 28. The center is set to employ 75 researchers, according a JoongAng Daily report.

The center is expected to cost $48 million over the period to 2010 with TI paying half and half coming from the South Korean government, the report said.

The TI Wireless Technology Center is in Samsung-dong, southern Seoul, and would be focused on developing mobile multimedia systems as templates for systems companies to adopt. The center is set to work with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology to develop next-generation mobile multimedia platforms that can receive multiple forms of broadcasting.

TI is set to assign 30 researchers, or 40 percent of the research staff, to the project, including researchers from its U.S. headquarters, said the report. Currently, 11 other companies, including Intel, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Microsoft, operate research centers in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communication, the report added.
