Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO) announced that its board of directors approved the company's proposed investment of $60 million in its LCD module facilities in Ningbo, China. The company will also invest $30 million to establish a new LCD module company in southern China.

According to the Taiwan-based panel maker, the investments will require approval from the investment commission of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) of Taiwan.

CMO CFO Eddie Chen disclosed that the $60 million financing will be allotted to purchase the remaining shares of Chi Mei Optoelectronics (Ningbo). The plant has started operations in building A while building B is currently under construction. Chen added that the total capacity of the two production facilities is expected to reach 1.5 million units by the first half of next year.

Meanwhile, the $30 million investment will be used to set up a second LCD module company, which will have CMO as its full owner. The company was reported to be considering Guangdong and Fujian as possible sites for the new company.
