Tyco Electronics has launched a high-current card edge connector based on its SEC-II product line. The SEC-II power connector increases the current carrying capacity by more than 70 percent as compared to traditional card edge connectors. It's most suitable for space limited applications or where density approaches 100A per linear inch.

The SEC-II power connector carries up to 25A per contact and is available in a variety of combinations of power and signal contacts combined in a single molded housing. Tyco said the increased ampacity comes from a triple beam power contact, which increases the cross sectional area of the contact yet maintains the same mating force and contact wipe as the SEC-II signal contacts.

The connectors are available with three mounting options. These are PCB tails for soldering to plated through-holes, compliant press-fit PCB tails, and straddle/surface-mount PCB tails for co-planar applications. These connectors can be used in traditional voltage regulator module applications historically built around the SEC-II.

A 100A straddle mount SEC-II power connector with 20 signals is priced at $3.86 each in quantities of 1,000.
