Samsung, Sony sign to spend $2B at S-LCD

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd and Sony Corp. have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) saying they intend to spend $2 billion to manufacture large amorphous TFT LCD panels (so-called 8th generation) at their joint venture, S-LCD.

According to the companies, they plan to establish an amorphous TFT LCD panel production line for glass panel sizes of approximately 2.2 meters by 2.5 meters at S-LCD factory at Tangjeong, Chung Cheong Nam-Do, South Korea.

The companies plan for 8th generation amorphous TFT LCD panel facility is targeted to start production in fall 2007. The planned production capacity is 50,000 panels per month.

Both Samsung and Sony are expected to aim the output of the factory at LCD televisions.
