International buyers turned out in the thousands at the opening day of the China Sourcing Fair in Hong Kong the other day. The fair runs from April 15 to 18 at the new 70,000sqm exhibition venue, AsiaWorld-Expo.

More than 1,700 booths are on exhibit at the fair, offering a wide array of electronics productsfrom consumer electronics to electronic components and power supplies. These are supplemented by a large number of exhibitors displaying telecom, security, digital imaging, in-car and computer and networking products.

While many of the exhibitors are the names behind familiar brands and well-known exporters such as Konka, Apollo Worldwide and China Great-Wall Computer, 95 percent of the suppliers are exhibiting in Hong Kong for the first time.

"Based on what we have seen so far, we are going to meet our aim to explore new potential suppliers," said David Leng, the product manager for Singapore based EXER Technologies. "We are also delighted with the design-to-export theme of the show because our business is to service OEM clients as well as R&D [design] houses", he added.

With two halls of the fair housing more than 500 suppliers of active and passive components and supplies, Exer will not go away empty handed in its search to fill its long buying list of electronic components.

Global Sources chairman and CEO Merle Hinrichs, who praised the Hong Kong SAR government's "foresight and vision in building a world class facility with more than 70,000sqm of column-free exhibition spaceall on one level," opened the event.

"This fair is perfectly timed to complement other sourcing shows in Hong Kong and southern China and offer buyers more specialized exhibits to visit," he said. "This will make Hong Kong truly Asia's Trade Show Capital."

Hinrichs also said that the global demand for China-made products and merchandise is insatiable, citing China's exports of more than 53 million MP3 players and $1.1 trillion worth of passive components among other examples.
