Murata Mfg. Co. has said it intends to buy SyChip Inc. for about $135 million. The deal is expected to close later in April and be conducted through Murata's U.S. subsidiary, Murata Electronics North America Inc.

SyChip, a spinoff from Bell Labs in 2000, was set up to commercialize technology to integrate high Q passives components and transistors in chip-scale modules for radio frequency applications. SyChip CSMs are supplied to mobile terminals such as mobile phones, PDAs, point-of-sale terminals, Murata said. SyChip is also developing integrated passive device technology based on the use of silicon substrates.

SyChip raised $15 million in venture capital and hired a former Texas Instruments broadband manager, George Barber, as its CEO in November 2001.
