Expecting a consistent rise in the market for electric audio and power jacks, Wealth Metal Fty Ltd ensures that all its products comply with overseas export standards. The Hong Kong-based company supplies switches, which takes up about 70 percent of its production, and audio and power sockets.

To set itself apart from its competitors, Wealth Metal has invested heavily on in-house testing and production facilities to ensure RoHS compliance.

"We have been RoHS-compliant since last year, although we started preparing since three years ago," said Vincent Or, Wealth Metal's general manager. "Over the course of that time, we have had to invest in new testing facilities such as ICP equipment, for which we had to put up a separate laboratory. This enables us to test products in-house, making sure they comply with EU regulations. The ICP enables us to test our products in-house and check if they meet the material ppm levels as dictated by RoHS," Or added.

Wealth Metal has invested around $100,000 on ICT machines alone. "We also had to put up a new testing lab for the ICT, purchase a new automatic printing line, and switch to lead-free pasting material. All these entailed similar expenses, but these investments are absolutely necessary to ensure that our products are up to standard before submission to an outside testing body. Some companies that don't have their own equipment end up spending on outside testing repeatedly until they get it right," shared Or.

Portable audio market
Asked to comment on the growth of the portable audio market, Or said, "Given the rising standard of living in Greater China, the population factor and the dropping prices of MP3 players, this sector has no signs of slowing down. Growth in this market benefits us directly since all MP3 players use audio jacks. Furthermore, increasing functions in portable electronics require specialized on-board power sockets that can support these functions."
