National Semiconductor Corp. introduced a Boomer 1.3W mono Class AB audio amplifier for cellphone handsfree and ringer functions. The LM4995 is a housed in a 1.25-by-1.25mm, 0.4mm-pitch micro SMD package, which is said to save space. According to National, the package uses 30 percent less space on the PCB than existing audio amplifiers.

Operating on a single 5V supply, the amplifier is capable of driving an eight-ohm speaker load at a continuous average output of 1.3W with less than one percent total harmonic distortion plus noise. The LM4995 offers a high power supply rejection ratio of 74dB at 217Hz and a low quiescent power supply current of 1.6mA.

The LM4995 does not require bootstrap capacitors or snubber circuits. It features a low-power-consumption shutdown mode and an internal thermal shutdown protection mechanism, as well as advanced pop-and-click circuitry that aims to eliminate output transients which would otherwise occur during power or shutdown cycles. The product is also unity-gain stable and has externally-configurable gain that is said to use simple gain-setting resistors.

Available now in a Pb-free, nine-bump micro SMD package, the LM4995 is priced at 65 cents in 1,000-unit quantities.
