Samsung's 2Gbyte MultiMediaCard

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd announced that it has developed a 2Gbyte MultiMediaCard (MMCmicro) that combines four 4Gbit NAND flash devices. Samsung claims that this is the smallest and fastest memory card for cellphones.

Measuring 12-by-14-by-1.1mm, the memory card transmits data 3.5 times faster than other cards, said the company. The card can store 12 hours of mobile video and is said to be capable of downloading three hours of the video in less than two minutes. An adapter allows the card to be plugged into any multimedia card slot. The MMCmicro can operate at either 1.8V or 3.3V.

According to Samsung, the product can be obtained by manufacturers without royalties or licensing fees. The 1Gbyte memory card will be commercially available in 2006.

Dataquest reported that as the global memory card market will grow five percent between 2005 and 2010, the multimedia card market will grow 17 percent and the MMCmicro market by 95 percent during the same period.
