Semitop power package

Semikron International and STMicroelectronics are teaming up to develop integrated power modules for industrial, consumer and automotive markets, embedding STMicro's power devices in Semikron's Semitop power packages.

According to the press release, this collaboration creates opportunities for traditional power devices, including insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) and power MOSFETs, as well as for STMicro's proprietary emitter-switched bipolar transistor devices, which combine power bipolar and power MOSFET structures.

The Semitop package is said to allow several chips, such as IGBTs, diodes and input bridge rectifiers to be integrated in a single module. It uses processes and materials, including direct bond copper ceramic substrate and internal gel coating, which is said to give immunity to external temperature variation and mechanical stress.

The new integrated power modules aim to address the growing demand for more integrated and reliable high-power platforms in a wide range of segments and applications, including welding, UPS, home appliances, motor drives and switch-mode power supplies.

"The partnership with STMicro guarantees that higher volumes can be produced and the established existing range can be expanded," explained Riccardo Ramin, Semitop product manager at Semikron.

Volume production of the power modules will start in Q2 2006. STMicro and Semikron will market them independently.
