Analog Devices Inc.'s (ADI's) iMEMS motion signal processing technology, which is at the core of Source Audio's Hot Hand guitar effects controller, targets musicians looking for more control over their guitar effects. Incorporating ADI's ADXL320 iMEMS accelerometer, the effects controller attaches to a guitarist's picking hand. By sensing the musician's hand or finger motion, the product allows the guitarist to manipulate sound effects using an interface console that includes 11 "wah-wah" type filter effects.

"ADI's iMEMS accelerometer enabled a controller small enough to fit on a finger of a guitar player's picking hand," commented Roger Smith, president, Source Audio. "The whole idea of Hot Hand is to change the way guitarists manipulate effects without anchoring them to traditional pedal-effects consoles or other fixed on-stage devices."

The ADXL320 has a typical measurement range of 15g and measures the motions generated by a guitar player's hand. Mounted in a ring on a user's strumming hand, the accelerometer's x- and y-axis analog outputs provide measurements for both movement and tilt. The SigmaDSP audio processor comes with 24bit ADCs and DACs that is said to have over 100dB dynamic range. The audio processor features a 56bit fixed-point multiplier/accumulator, on-board data and program memory, clock generation circuit, and acceleration blocks for common audio processing macro-functions (such as filters).

Available in a 4-by-4-by-1.45mm plastic lead-frame chip-scale package (LFCSP), the iMEMS accelerometer operates on power supplies as low as 2.4V with typical supply current of only 350A, and can be power-cycled. The typical noise floor is 250g per rtHz, allowing small tilt changes to be sensed using the narrow bandwidths (<10Hz) typical of human motion. Bandwidths of 0.5Hz to 2.5kHz may be selected to suit the application.
