ICS-1745 ADC board

The ICS Sensor Processing part of Radstone Embedded Computing is debuting an eight-channel acoustic ADC board designed for military sonar applicationsincluding littoral and anti-mineand vibration analysis. Each analog-input channel is sampled at up to 5MHz with 16bit resolution.

Derived from the company's predecessor ICS-645D board, the ICS-1745 is intended for space-, weight-, and power-sensitive applications. Remote mine hunting systems based on UUV/AUVs (unmanned or autonomous underwater vehicles) are a prime example.

The board is characterized by its 3U-sized CompactPCI (cPCI) form-factor. The 3U cPCI form factor gives you substantial reductions in size and weight over predecessor products.

ICS Sensor Processing's ICS-1745 board features eight channels of acoustic analog input and on-board signal conditioning with programmable gain. You also get 8Mbytes of memory in two banks. The board is priced at about $8000 a pop.

Analog Devices inside
The ICS-1745's eight channels use Analog Devices AD9260 switched-capacitor chips. These CMOS are 16bit over-sampled ADCs. Their high dynamic range is achieved with an over-sampling ratio of 8X, using a technique that combines the advantages of sigma-delta and pipeline converter technologies.

The AD9260 ICs also use on-chip decimation filtering. A series of three half-band finite impulse response filter stages provide 8X decimation filtering with 85dB of stopband attenuation and 0.004dB of passband ripple. An onboard digital multiplexer provides access data from the various stages of the decimation filter. An on-chip programmable reference and reference buffer amplifier are also included.

With buffer memory, the system delivers 2.5MSps speed. The on-board buffering sidesteps the requirement for external signal conditioning logic.

Through software, you can specify one of four input voltage ranges. With a maximum bandwidth of 1.25MHz, the ICS-1745 supports four differential input-voltage ranges of 20V pp, 2V pp, 200mV pp, and 20mV pp.

Synchronous sampling
All channels sample synchronously, with very close phase matching between channels. An anti-alias cut-off filter frequency is fixed at 1.25MHz for the standard product, but other frequencies can be supplied on request.

Differential analog input is also provided via the board's front panel, but a second connector (also on the front panel) supports multiple board synchronization for systems requiring higher channel counts.

All control and data I/O is accomplished using the PCI 2.2 interface (64bit, 66MHz) that supports universal signaling (5V/3.3V). A PCI Bus Master interface provides chained (scatter-gather) and non-chain mode burst transfers.

Software drivers are available for Windows and Linux operating systems.

Radstone Embedded Computing says the availability of the ICS-1745 is immediate.
