Infineon Technologies AG capitalized on weak performances by rivals to rise to the No. 2 position in global DRAM sales for the first time during Q1, according to preliminary estimates from market analyst firm iSuppli Corp.

According to iSuppli, Infineon achieved Q1 DRAM sales of $1.16 billion, up 49 percent from $778 million in Q4 of 2005. The company also captured 17.5 percent of total DRAM market share, up from 12.6 percent from the previous quarter.

Infineon's success came at the expense of rivals Micron Technology Inc. of the United States and Hynix Semiconductor Inc. of South Korea.

The company's ranking rose to number two, two places higher than the fourth-place position it held in the Q4, surpassing Micron, which slipped from the third to fourth position, and Hynix, which slipped from the second to the third position. Samsung, however, remained atop the DRAM heap in the Q1, with 26.6 percent market share, according to iSuppli.
