EDA tool vendor Synopsys Inc. disclosed its plans to increase investment by an undisclosed amount in its Shanghai-based R&D team to keep pace with China's increasing role as a regional chip design center, according to chairman and CEO Aart de Geus.

The Shanghai-based team was initially a raw team of mostly fresh graduates According to de Geus, it has progressed quickly from relatively simple tasks to complex challenges involving the development of tools and the integration of technology. The results merit more investment not only to increase recruiting but also because of the size of the end market, de Geus explained.

China is driving the Asian region's consumption of semiconductors, and that is attracting more local startups hoping to get in on the growth. Market researcher In-Stat forecasts that annual semiconductor consumption in Asia will jump from $136.5 billion in 2005 to $203 billion in 2010, or about 66 percent of global consumption.

China is also reported to have more than 400 electronics design companies, although many of them are still in their infancy. According to Synopsys, they are already helping several clients in China fight through the challenges of 90nm design. "About half are multinational companies, like Freescale," said Pan Jian-yue, country manager of China for Synopsys. "One or two are run by returnees, but one [design] was done by a local company not run by returnees, and they have progressed on their own, in partnership with us, during the last four years."
