Samsung SDI Co. Ltd reported lower shipment of PDPs last quarter, falling behind rival LG Electronics Inc. (LGE) and following its lost on the top spot in the PDP line late last year to Japan-based Matsushita Electric Ind. Co. Ltd.

Samsung SDI reported a 21 percent decline in PDP shipments from 700,000 units in Q4 2005 to 550,000 units in Q1 2006. Meanwhile, LGE posted a 9 percent on-quarter surge in shipments to 730,000 panels in the same period.

Although demand for PDPs from the flat panel TV sector was strong, Samsung SDI said its capacity slowed down at its number 3 line due to delays in utilizing its multi-cut process. The South Korean panel maker also slowed down expansions plans, and its PDP revenue fell by 26 percent from $599 million to $442 million last quarter.

However, Samsung SDI remains optimistic of the PDP market, revising its 2006 forecast for global PDP demand from 11 million units to 12 million units. It also expects shipments to increase by 8 percent this quarter. Furthermore, the company is set to invest in its fourth PDP line, which will bring Samsung SDI's annual PDP production capacity to 7.32 million units.
