DC/DC regulator adds power-management smarts

Texas Instruments' TPS62350 step-down regulator is the first DC/DC chip compatible with the company's SmartReflex technology for extending system performance and Lithium-ion battery life in 3G phones and other portable electronics. The chip features an I2C communications interface for setting OS parameters.

The synchronous regulator, working from a single-cell Lithium-ion source, can deliver up to 800mA at a user-adjustable 0.75V to 1.53V for the company's DSPs, SmartReflex-enabled OMAP3430 and other processor core power supplies in cellphones, PDAs, digital still cameras, as well as handheld computers that use Intel's XScale processors. Operating efficiency is 88 percent.

The device's serial interface is compatible with the fast/standard and high-speed mode I2C specs for data transfer at up to 3.4Mbps. The chip's dynamic voltage scaling feature allows the user to adjust voltage levels in 12.5mV steps and the chip to seamlessly switch to an efficiency-optimized light power factor mode (PFM), a transient-optimized fast PFM mode, or a forced PFM mode.

The TPS62350's high (3MHz) operating frequency facilitates the use of low-cost, space-efficient inductors and capacitors. Other features include a pulse-width modulation DC voltage accuracy of 2 percent, minimum on-time of 35ns, and typical quiescent current of 28A.

The TPS62350 is sampling now. The regulator, in 12-pin, 2.2-by-1.4mm chip-scale and 10-pin, 3-by-3mm QFN package versions, has a suggested resale price of $2.05 each in 1,000 quantities. Evaluation modules of the TPS62350 and application notes are available at TI's website.

SmartReflex technologies, a broad range of intelligent and adaptive hardware and software techniques that dynamically control voltage, frequency and power based on device activity, modes of operation and temperature, coordinate the power consumption and performance of all major system components including multiple processing cores, hardware accelerators, functional blocks and peripherals. Its library of power management cells enables a granular approach to system partitioning of the portable device's power domains. SmartReflex technologies provide an open software framework that enables intelligent coordination among lower-level hardware technologies and compatibility with OS-based and third-party power management software.
