STMicroelectronics NV (ST) is planning to demonstrate the compatibility of a chip for high-definition television STBs and other digital consumer equipment with the Windows CE 5.0 operating system from Microsoft Corp.

The demonstration, due to take place at this week's Mobile and Embedded Developers Conference in Las Vegas, is based on the STB7109 high-definition decoder chip and an STB reference design that includes an Ethernet interface, a USB 2.0 port and a serial ATA port. There is also a copy protected high-definition multimedia interface, to allow the signal to be sent to an high definition flat panel display. The chip also handles several audio decode standards.

ST's platform is intended to be customized into a variety of networked digital products, IP set-top boxes, DVD players and digital video recorders, the company said.

"Working with Microsoft, we have taken a major step toward providing consumer electronics manufacturers with a stable and cost-effective platform for the rapidly growing networked-DVR and IP-STB market," said Christos Lagomichos, corporate vice president and general manager of the home entertainment group at ST, in a statement. "Foreseeing the booming of the next generation of high-definition media, we are also closely paying attention to HD-DVD technology and already preparing for the next evolutionary step of this platform."
