Eliminating the 12V supply that would normally be required for its high-voltage line drivers, Wolfson Microelectronics said its WM8522 and WM8501 multi-channel DACs, for the cost-competitive DVD player and recorder market, will save $2.80 per system.

The WM8522 (six channel device) and WM8501 (two channels) integrate 1.7Vrms line drivers to accommodate the requirements of today's consumer electronics equipment; standard audio DACs field 0.7Vrms-1Vrms applications. The WM8522 and the WM8501 provide the high voltage output using a standard 5V supply line, versus the dedicated 12V supply that would normally be required to update traditional designs. The resulting cost savings amounts to an average of $2.80 per system, according to the company, and dramatically reduces real-estate requirements.

The WM8522 includes programmable audio and data interface modes and three independent stereo DAC outputs having independent volume controls. The device supports audio input word lengths of 16bits to 32bits and sampling rates from 8kHz to 192kHz. It's suited for six-channel DVD and 5.1 surround sound systems in both home and automotive applications.

The WM8501 is designed for stereo audio applications that require a high voltage output. The device comprises a stereo DAC, digital interpolation filters, multi-bit sigma delta modulators and a serial interface port. The WM8501 supports data input word lengths from 16bits to 24bits with sampling rates to 192kHz. It has a pin-selectable audio data interface format.

The WM8522, in a 28-pin SSOP package, is priced at $1.83 each in 10,000 quantities. The WM8501, in a 14-pin SOIC, is priced at $1.03.
