VGA mux cuts chip count

Maxim Integrated Products' MAX4885 1:2 or 2:1 VGA multiplexer, for laptop, digital projector, computer monitor and server applications, performs the entire video switching task: RGB, H/V sync, and display data channel (DDC) switching. Discrete solutions previously required three ICs, discrete FETs and ESD protection diodes.

"With the MAX4885, Maxim offers customers a complete solution at a highly-competitive price point and with a simple passive switch design," said Jeff DeAngelis, director of business management for the Interface, Switch, and Protection business unit. "The MAX4885 gives customers greater than 500MHz bandwidth and tri-state capability for achieving 4:1 mux ratios." In addition, the MAX4885 needs just 25mm2 of board space, half that normally required than multiple IC solutions, according to the company. The cost is also less, by 25 percent to 30 percent.

The MAX4885 integrates contains three spdt, 500MHz analog switches; two spdt H/V signal switches; two spdt DDC signal switches; two logic-level buffers; and 8kV ESD protection devices. In the 1:2 multiplexer mode, signals on the H/V inputs are level-shifted to support CMOS or standard TTL-compatible graphics controllers. In the 2:1 multiplexer mode, the output buffers for the H/V sync inputs are disabled to facilitate bidirectional signaling. A tri-state feature allows the cascading of multiple MAX4885 ICs. Multiplexing ratios of 4:1 or more can be achieved to support more than two video sources. The chip operates from a single 5V supply, and accommodates operation from a 3.3V source.

Pricing for the MAX4885, which is offered in a 32-pin TQFN, begins at $1.25 each (1000-up, FOB USA). Samples are currently available. An application board is also available.
